Body Scrub 101: How Often Should You Exfoliate (and How to Do It Right)

Exfoliation is the fastest way to glowing skin — and also the easiest step to overdo. Here's how to get it right.

Why exfoliate at all?

Your skin naturally sheds dead cells, but they don't always fall away cleanly — they build up, leaving skin dull, rough and prone to clogged pores. A mineral body scrub lifts that layer away, revealing the fresh skin underneath and helping moisturizers absorb better afterwards.

How often should you use a body scrub?

• Normal skin: 2 times a week
• Dry or sensitive skin: once a week, with a gentle touch
• Oily skin: 2–3 times a week

More is not better. Over-exfoliating damages your skin barrier and causes redness and dryness — the opposite of the glow you're after.

The right technique, in 4 steps

1. Soften up first

Scrub at the end of your shower, after warm water has softened your skin for a few minutes.

2. Use gentle circles

Apply the scrub with light, circular motions — let the salt crystals do the work, not pressure. Spend extra time on elbows, knees and heels.

3. Rinse with lukewarm water

Hot water strips freshly exfoliated skin. Lukewarm keeps it comfortable.

4. Moisturize immediately

This is the secret step: right after exfoliating, your skin absorbs moisture best. Apply your body cream or oil within a couple of minutes while skin is still slightly damp.
