A good hair mask can transform dry, frizzy or tired hair — but only if you use it correctly. Most people rush it. Here's the method that actually works.
Step 1: Start with clean, damp hair
Shampoo first, then gently squeeze out excess water with a towel. A mask on soaking-wet hair gets diluted; on dry hair it won't spread evenly. Damp is the sweet spot.
Step 2: Focus on mid-lengths and ends
This is the mistake almost everyone makes: applying mask to the roots. Your roots get natural oils from your scalp — it's the ends that are oldest and driest. Work the mask from mid-length down, and use whatever's left on your hands near the roots only if your scalp is dry.
Step 3: Comb it through
Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to distribute the product evenly. Every strand should be coated — uneven application means uneven results.
Step 4: Give it time (and a little warmth)
Follow the timing on your product — usually 5–10 minutes. For a deeper treatment, wrap your hair in a warm towel: gentle heat opens the hair cuticle so the minerals and oils absorb better.
Step 5: Rinse with cool water
Finish with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture. This one small step is the difference between soft hair and shiny, soft hair.
How often should you use a hair mask?
Once a week for normal hair; twice a week if your hair is very dry, color-treated, or exposed to a lot of sun and heat styling — which, in our region's climate, is most of us.
